Ford Anglia E493 0A/B (1950)
First need to thank god for making it look simple. Next my grandpa for injecting few drops of oil in our blood :)
Thanks to the tinker, spare parts sellers from various parts of India ( particularly Late Kirupakar rao sir) and UK (preserved the parts these many years which helped to bring back more than 90% of its originality), @Rajapandian and his friends who helped with shipping various parts from uk(e.g.starter motor- I can't imagine myself carrying a 7-8 kg motor from UK to India in my check-in limit), Smallfordspares UK for technical information (when we started, we really don't know how most of the parts look like and this knowledge base helped us). Special thanks to few sellers(James Stables, Patrick Fitzgerald) in UK, Akram/Rehan (India) who helped with bringing the car to its originality.
This is what it was when purchased by @vinu.
Restoration started by around 2016 September when we got the steering box from Rehan (which brought the hope that at least we can roll wheel on chassis). Next was the expertise and knowledge of my dad and his brothers along with torquing effort from @vinu, which made the wheels to roll and mechanical brakes to work.
There were two major challenges:
- Restoring rear half of the car - which would not be possible with out the skillful work of tinker and 5am duty from @vinu :).
2. Restoring original side valve engine which was bathing in rain/sun for several decades and just had engine block, head, crank, cam parts, manifolds, oil pump, clutch assembly and carburettor. We sourced the below:
- new piston,rings,gasket
- Main bearing
- Old Connecting rods (with paste type bearing)
- Timing chain
- Valves
- incomplete spare engine to get the missing parts (lucky to get this)
- Distributor
- Starter motor
- Dynamo with fan for cooling(engine doesn't have water pump concept)
- Fuel pump
Engines were re-bored in lathe and was set by my dad
Other challenges were:
- making the gearbox to work
- Suspension and crown overhauling
- Wiring - only Periappa can do the original wiring replica and has the historical knowledge of all electronic components in these cars.
- Spares - how many times chithappa would have travelled between workshop and Chettikulam (god only knows)
- Quality check (specialist chithappa and @vinu ).
- Sourcing Tyre's, Bakelite dashboard and meter console, headlights,inner/outer door handles, radiator restoration, badges, speedo pinion, trafficators, horn button, boot light and handle, roof light, hand brake, glasses and rubbers.
- Getting a painter.
- Finally a Test Drive - Wheels rolled after 3-4 decades. (Almost similar to test drive done after my grandmas knee replacement :P )
Finally Painting happened after a year gap on 30-04-2018 ....
Driver side Eye gets back vision after decades....
28-8-2018 -- Few more fittings has been loaded...
So restoration is going to be complete soon with all the required spares already procured. Will update soon.
